In order to get into medical school, you must take the dreaded MCAT. This test is a doozy. 8 hours in a hard plastic chair with a wet-erase board (seriously? wet erase for a timed test. ugh!). This test is about 4.5 years of undergrad courses all rolled into one. So, yes, everything you learned about the Krebs cycle, social interactionism, embryogenesis, physics, and what feels like a million other things is on one test. Kill me. But not until after I get that 528!
As I dive deeper into my study material, I’m finding that organization is key. My study schedule is rigorous but necessary. Each day is dedicated to mastering a specific aspect of the MCAT – from Biology to Chemistry and beyond. I’m using a mixture of textbooks, online resources, and flashcards to help me retain information.
Special shoutout to Anki for saving me
As I continue to navigate the challenging waters of MCAT preparation, I am learning to appreciate the importance of balance. It is all too easy to get lost in the sea of information and forget to take care of oneself. So, in addition to my MCAT studies, I’ve also been focusing on work, and staying healthy, both physically and mentally. Simple things like taking walks, eating balanced meals, and getting a good night’s sleep have been integral to maintaining my energy levels and focus.
Furthermore, I’ve found it extremely beneficial to connect with others who are also preparing for the MCAT. Whether it’s sharing resources, discussing difficult concepts, or just venting about the stress, having a support system has made this journey a bit less daunting.
TIMELINE UPDATE:
Typically, premeds take the MCAT anywhere from January to May (grab your seat early as your testing centers fill up quickly during these months)
The next step after the MCAT is to fill out the medical school application via AMCAS – it opens in June!
It’s going to be challenging, but I’m ready to take it on. In my next update, I’ll share more about my study techniques and the resources I’ve found most helpful. Until then, wish me luck!
Stay tuned!
